Many leaders have developed a tolerance for risk. They understand that the business world is messy and complex, and that there are many variables and uncertainities in play. They meet challenges with  patience, endurance, and an ability to varied their approach.
Some leaders have strict routines. They stick to the same old tactics over and over again, even when the situation calls for a different strategy. routines are useful for guiding narrow decisions. However, as soon as you let go of control, they can become a burden. maintaining a routine can be difficult because it is so easy to want to take action instead of wait. Even small differences in habit can make a big difference in how a person leads.
Most leaders start out not knowing what they want to do. They develop a strategy and pursue it blindly. Eventually, they come across insights that help them refine their strategy  — and make future decisions more effectively.
 Essence of Leadership
Leadership is the ability to make good decisions.
There is no universal formula for leadership. Each situation is unique. However, most leaders follow some version of the following six steps:
1. Define the Role
You can\'t be a good leader if you don\'t know what you want to lead. You need to define the role you want to play—whether it\'s business strategy, technology, project management, or a combination of these—and then work backwards from there.
You can define the role by identifying the tasks you want to invest in and outsource. Investing in  — and paying attention to — the things you define as leading to success can help you become a good leader.
2. Focus on the Team
Good leaders focus on the team rather than on themselves. They model the behavior they wish to see.
In our research, we have found that team members who are leading smaller teams are more likely to be successful in their careers and be better citizens. Leadership in these teams is less about getting things done and more about managing people and relationships.
These teams tend to be highly productive since they are always working on a series of tasks that matter. The fact that they have fewer meetings is a positive change as well.
